Chapter 20
February 2010
âIs he serious?â
Carolineâs voice ripped through me and I looked past her to Jude and Harriet arriving on the landing. Iâd asked just for Harriet, though Judeâs stony expression suggested the entourage hadnât been her idea. The three of them stopped on the other side of the desk, eyes fixed on me.
âWell?â Caroline pressed. âDoes he mean to let people out?â
I managed a nod.
Harriet exhaled and clapped her hands together. âThatâs brilliant, well done.â
âWasnât much I did.â
âEither way, itâs a result. Weâll have to do it fairly, mind you. Names in a hat or ââ
âCanât do that,â I cut in with a glance at Jude. She was gnawing on her lower lip, one arm resting over her stomach. âHe wants me to pick people to send out.â
Caroline scoffed. âOh, for Christâs sake! Youâre making this up.â
âLike hell she is,â said Jude.
âThis whole thingâs a practical joke,â Caroline spat. âItâs got to be. If you make a threat like this, you speak to the organ grinder, not the monkey. Heâd be talking to Harriet, making concrete demands. Itâs ridiculous anyway. Whoâd want to blow up an accounting centre, hmm? Tell me that.â
Judeâs fist bounced off the desk. âIf thatâs what you think, why are you still here?â
âBecause sheâs taking it seriously,â Caroline retorted, jabbing her thumb towards Harriet. âI thought there must be something in it, something youâve been keeping to yourselves.â
âBollocks. Youâre contradicting yourself, just like you always do.â
Harriet held up a hand. âShut up, the pair of you. If thatâs what Danniâs been told to do, Iâm not questioning it. Neither is anyone else.â
âHow would he even know?â Caroline queried.
âWeâre not taking the chance,â she answered.
Brittle silence settled over the four of us. Even with the desk between me and Jude, I could feel the protectiveness practically radiating from her. The tears from the loos had given way to her usual stoicism, all dedicated to shielding me from Caroline and whatever else tonight decided to chuck at us. I met her eye then mustered the strength to glance back to Harriet.
âCan we talk?â I asked.
She nodded and rounded the desk. âMeeting room, come on. Caroline â you stay with the phone. Jude â go downstairs and keep a lid on everything. Donât let on just yet.â
I spared one last look at Judeâs loving face before following Harriet through into the meeting room. Michaelâs door, when we passed, was firmly shut and the office was dark. Maybe he was downstairs with the others.
Harriet let the door swing shut of its own accord and rubbed her forehead. The usual bags round her eyes had lengthened over the last couple of hours. Now they looked like war paint dribbling into the lines around her nose. She collapsed into the chair at the head of the table and motioned for me to sit down. With just the two of us swamped by the table, I was reminded suddenly of my last one-to-one and Harriet telling me to assert myself more. It wasnât long after that Iâd allowed Jude to coax me into bed.
